If you are new to guitar, great book August 25, 2010 Bobby I am a beginner and this book really helped me learn about the guitar and accelerated my progress. It includes things I have not seen elsewhere (but probably have just missed them). For example, it includes suggestions on how to develop an ear for tone. I had resigned myself to beign tone deaf - but have been elated with what I can now recognize after a simple exercise.
I have only used a small portion of the book so far, and it looks like some stuff will always be beyond me :-) But it will be there when I need something to work on.
If you don't know a lot about music, it is well worth the money - a no brainer. If you have a bunch of instruction books already and busy enough, you might not need this one. It is a quality book with plenty of substance.
the best of the best July 21, 2010 M. Coughlin (Westerly, RI United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A month ago, I got 3 guitar music theory books, based upon 'best' ratings. I read them all ... Tom Kolb's book is the best of the best. By that I mean that this book is the most advanced.
It is mercifully succinct. It is accompanied by a CD, illustrating all manor of exotic chord progressions and substitutions. It makes so many points, regarding improvisation and writing harmony so clear that you are encouraged to create far more elaborate music than the going average performance.
If you are to get just one theory book, THIS is the one I would get. I read it in two days, highlighting and underlining etc. Then, on a third day I reviewed the whole thing, yet again, using the CD to illustrate all the lessons.
SUPERB ... thanks, Tom.
Lots of theory but zero guidance on how to apply July 2, 2010 J. Shah 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I picked up this book in the hopes of learning how music works (example why do C, F & G chords go together?) and to understand how songs and music are composed. I am sorely disappointed. This book provides a ton of jargon heavy technical information. But it will tell you absolutely nothing about how to use this information. For example, it will describe the Circle of fifths, but give absolutely no explanation of what this means to you as a guitar player. Chapter after chapter, it quickly skims through topics such a scales and chord construction, but never bothers to answer the question - so what?
This book is more of a dictionary or short-hand reference of music theory than a tutorial.
One of the Best Guitar Theory Books June 11, 2010 Kevin J. Mclaughlin (Austin, Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this book after reading the reviews on Amazon and agree that it is one of the best guitar theory books out there, and consider it to be the "gold standard" of guitar music theory.
I have been playing guitar for close to 40 years, mostly self taught and knew virtually no theory until about 3 years ago. I found this limiting to achieving a breakthrough to new playing skill and have an understanding of what I was doing. I started out with some of the basic books on theory, took some lessons and then got this book. Along the way, I bought many books that were not appropriate for my level and got frustrated.
This book is perfect for those guitar players who have some experience playing, have been exposed to some theory but need to have all the concepts in one place to reinforce their understanding of the core concepts and then start getting exposure to the more advanced topics like diatonic progressions, harmonization, modes, chord substitution, etc.
I would not recommend buying this book if you are a raw beginner with no music theory background. You will get overwhelmed as the book moves quickly into advanced concepts and topics. It does cover all the basic concepts in the beginning, but it will be difficult to get your brain around all this stuff without having some further training. I would suggest first buying some of the real basic thin and " fun" music theory books to get your mind around scales and intervals. You can browse these "pocket size" manuals at most music stores.
As others have pointed out, the book is logically and progressively laid out. This makes it a great reference. The accompanying CD is good for listening to the notes, scales, etc. I prefer a DVD format for the accompaniment, as the CD approach is a bit awkward. I'm not much of a fan of trying to browse a CD and look at a book at the same time. I leave this book on my living room coffee table and often will pick it up and review some of the chapters, just to reinforce some concept that I'm still getting my head wrapped around. If you are taking guitar lessons, I would definitely use this book to help structure your understanding of music theory with your instructor. I often found myself scratching my head after a 30 minute guitar lesson, then went to this book to get further grounded on the concept.
muy bueno May 30, 2010 Laurens Rodriguez (Peru, Lima) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
