A Must for Professionals & Lay Persons Alike August 3, 2010 Elisabeth As a consumer of healthcare services, this publication was enormously helpful not only in answering questions about the origins of Borderline Personality Disorder but also about the best and only way to effectively treat this disorder. From the homework assignments, to the handouts, and especially to the Distress Tolerance Techniques, this book delivers. I highly recommend it to anyone who desires practical ways of coping and of relating to professionals trying to help the patient cope.
Training Needed May 9, 2010 Jordan (Colorado) The skills manual is great, provided you receive appropriate training in DBT. DBT is an intensive treatment model. Without proper training, the manual is useless. Buyers should order with accompanying text: Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder (Linehan)
excellent workbook, especially for those working in psychiatric out patient units running groups and individual sessions March 9, 2010 Lyudmyla Bihus (Brooklyn, NY) I really like the introduction part which talks about borderline and covers specifics/challenges in working with such population. A must-have book for a clinical SW, excellent exercises to work with.
Very hard to follow January 22, 2010 J. Kao 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
unless you are taking a class this is very very hard to understand. It is far to advanced for the average person.
Something For Everyone December 2, 2009 A Strong Poet (Evanston, IL United States) "The Role of the Invalidating Environment in Emotion Dysregulation" (p.3) is the turnkey to this therapy. The CBT exercises about emotion regulation and stress tolerance are very good, but radical acceptance and mindfulness are what makes DBT therapy effective and revolutionary. Twelve step adherants will be familiar with these ideas too but the combination of modalities can provide something helpful for everyone. While initially written based on her work with women with suicidal behavior, like many new discoveries, DBT has proven to be effective for many different disorders.
A recent article in The Atlantic by D. Dobbs describes the "genetic vulnerability" model for those at risk for "depression, anxiety, ADHD, ... anti-social sociopathic or violent behaviors." The invalidating environment that Linehan stresses may be the deciding factor in what happens to these high-risk people, whether they become sociopaths, addicts, or "creative, successful, and happy people."
