Book Description

Disregarding the false notion that writing instruction in the primary grades needs to be mostly teacher directed, Jennifer Jacobson shows teachers how to develop a primary writer's workshop that helps nurture independent, engaged writers. No More "I'm Done!" demonstrates how to create a more productive, engaging, and rewarding writer's workshop. Jennifer guides teachers from creating a supportive classroom environment through establishing effective routines; shows teachers how to set up a writer's workshop; and provides an entire year of developmentally appropriate mini-lessons that build confidence and, ultimately, independence.

5 out of 5 stars Must-Have and not just for primary aged students...   August 22, 2010

I am a former 4th and 5th grade teacher who is moving to 1st grade this year. I picked up this book after reading its fabulous reviews. I can't say enough about how essential this book is for all elementary teachers. It is practical and provides so many excellent ideas on how to run writer's workshop. If I move to upper elementary again I would use most of the ideas Jacobson suggests in this book to encourage independent writers. A quick-read and a well written, you won't be able to put this book down. It will have stickies from cover to cover. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource   August 15, 2010

This book is an essential in primary classrooms. Although I've taught first graders how to write for years, this book has inspired me to approach it from a different direction and tweak what I do to make it more user friendly for both the kids and myself. Great commonsense approach to writing instruction, and a book you'll carry around and refer to all year long!

5 out of 5 stars The word needs to get out about this book!   August 9, 2010

I feel strongly that the word needs to get out about this book because it deserves more notice than it seems to be getting. The previous reviewer who likened it to the Daily 5-for-writing book was spot on. They are similar in that they both provide a framework to help you successfully manage reading/writing workshop.

The management tips are what really set this book apart from the other books. Sometimes it's the little things that can make all the difference. The book is full of those "little things" like the Quiet 10, a structure for conducting an efficient conference, what to do if kids come up to talk to you in the middle of a conference, what to do with all those "sloppy copies" at the end of the month, easy ways for kids to edit their work (spider legs and surgery!)... all this AND tons of mini-lessons to get you started.

You can use the ideas in this book whether you use Lucy Calkins, 6-traits, or have no writing program at all. I can't wait to get started on the school year so I can start writers workshop. It's been a long time since I've felt this way about writing!

This is a fantastic resource to use, even in Kindergarten. I know a lot of teachers shy away from writer's workshop for 5-6 year olds, but the ideas and tips in this book really work.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Resource for Teachers   July 30, 2010

The most helpful book on writing I've read. Combines writers workshop idea with 6-traits. Tons of good ideas and specific lessons. I can't wait to try these out in my classroom this year!
