Product Description

After Hudson Savage betrayed her, Dana Cardwell hoped never to lay eyes on the seductive cowboy again. Until a bunch of old bones showed up on her family ranch. Suddenly her former lover was back in her life in a big way-to investigate a decades-old crime.

Five years ago, Hud left town with a heart load of regrets. But now, as acting interim marshal, he had a job to do. And this time he wasn't walking away. Because now Dana's life was on the line-as the unsuspecting target of a killer who still walked the canyon. Hud would do whatever it took to keep Dana close. Even if it meant risking his own heart for a second chance for both of them....

4 out of 5 stars Looking to be entertained? This one's for you!   September 8, 2010
Shane R. Mueller (Stillwater, MN, US)
Okay, full disclosure right off the bat: I consider myself somewhat snobbish when it comes to literature and I've never read a Harlequin book before, or any "trashy novels" as my mother calls them (and she is an afficianado of trashy novels!).

I received a paperback copy of this book upon entering the Minnesota State Fair on Sunday morning; they were having some big "Harlequin Intrigue" promotion. Since my wife made me leave my Kindle at home, ("We're going to the fair! You don't need to read at the fair!" she scolded)I didn't have anything to read while I walked and waited with the other 210,000 people in attendance! I pulled this book from my Fair bag and started reading it aloud in my "sexy phone voice" as my wife calls it...

After reading a few pages, and embarassing my two sons, "Dad, people are staring at you! Stop it!", I started reading it while I walked around the fair, using my youngest son as my guide. I will say that I was surprised that the book was not awful!

I really liked the pace of the book! While not the near-perfect pace of John Grisham or Dan Brown, Daniels does a fine job pacing the book and keeping the reader turning pages; even during the exposition, the book never really seems to drag. Another thing I enjoyed was the appreciation Daniels has for the uncharted West. You get the sense that she really loves the Montana landscape she richly describes.

Now for a couple of my complaints. It felt live she overused the simile. It was as if every paragraph HAD to have a simile in it. Some of them were quite good, don't get me wrong, but there were many that were trite and over-used. Another thing that I would have liked was more character develoment. I like characters, these ones, however, seemed a bit two-dimensional, but I suppose that would have bogged down the pacing...

It wasn't out to prove any universal truths or speak any great truths about humankind, nor did it pretend to do so. And really, there was absolutely NO eroticism in it (there was a half-page of intimacy hinted at and some nuance here and there, but NOTHING like what I had expected after listening to my mother describe her "trash." If you just want to be entertained for a few hours, this is a book you would probably enjoy.

I rate it 3-1/2 stars!!!

3 out of 5 stars Minnesota State Fair   September 3, 2010

I started reading this book on my kindle a few days ago. It's a ok story and worth reading for being free. Today, I went to the Minnesota Statefair and they had cowboys handing paperback copies out free. This author must be having one huge marketing campaign.

1 out of 5 stars Crime Scene at Cardwell Ranch: A Teen's Perspective   September 1, 2010

Harlequin shipped us these books (6 copies to be exact) as a ploy for us to purchase from them. My cousin and I read this book together and let me just say that this book is by far the worse piece of worthless crap I have ever read. Predictable story line, cheesy over-romantic main male, pathetically weak main female character all complete with corny names to match. Free or not this book is a horrible waste of trees. As soon as we finished it, we placed it in File 13 (the garbage.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!   August 25, 2010

This in my opinion was a wonderful book. Well written and kept you guessing til the end. I have also suggested this book to several friends and everyone of them that I know that has read it loved it as well. Thank you for such a great read. Can't wait to read more.

1 out of 5 stars I should have paid more attention   August 19, 2010

I should have paid more attention before ordering this book. Had I noticed that it was publshed by Harlequin, I would have known it was a romance rather than a mystery as the title implies. Nothing within the book took it out of the romance formula, and I didn't bother to finish it.
