New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen’s relentless, inventive novels take readers on pulse-racing thrill rides that are as satisfying as they are heart-stopping. Now, in this edge-of-your-seat suspense novel, a mysteriously isolated town stands abandoned as a silent watcher waits.

In Wyoming for a medical conference, Boston medical examiner Maura Isles joins a group of friends on a spur-of-the-moment ski trip. But when their SUV stalls on a snow-choked mountain road, they’re stranded with no help in sight.

As night falls, the group seeks refuge from the blizzard in the remote village of Kingdom Come, where twelve eerily identical houses stand dark and abandoned. Something terrible has happened in Kingdom Come: Meals sit untouched on tables, cars are still parked in garages. The town’s previous residents seem to have vanished into thin air, but footprints in the snow betray the presence of someone who still lurks in the cold darkness—someone who is watching Maura and her friends.

Days later, Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli receives the grim news that Maura’s charred body has been found in a mountain ravine. Shocked and grieving, Jane is determined to learn what happened to her friend. The investigation plunges Jane into the twisted history of Kingdom Come, where a gruesome discovery lies buried beneath the snow. As horrifying revelations come to light, Jane closes in on an enemy both powerful and merciless—and the chilling truth about Maura’s fate.

Look for Tess Gerritsen's other Rizzoli & Isles eBooks: The Surgeon (contains additional bonus content), The Apprentice, The Sinner, Body Double, Vanish, The Mephisto Club, and The Keepsake.

Published in the UK as THE KILLING PLACE.

4 out of 5 stars Brrrr...great mystery!   September 8, 2010

I felt kind of blase about Gerritsen's previous book (The Keepsake)but Ice Cold really steps back up to her previous level of suspense and intrigue.

Maura is the focus here--she heads off to a medical conference in Wyoming, very conflicted about her relationship with Daniel and where it is heading. She meets up with an old friend and joins him and some others on a trip to the mountains for a fun ski trip. Unfortunately, they trust the GPS and become stranded in the woods. They happen upon a religious compound called Kingdom Come, but the houses are all abandoned yet look like the residents stepped away in the middle of their daily lives. Stuck due to deep snow and a storm, the group must figure out how to survive and how to seek help.

I liked Maura in this book, and I liked that she was forced to think about her life back home and what changes she might need to make if she survived. The secondary characters really enhanced the story, and the mystery was a good one with a satisfying conclusion.

What I didn't like was the jumpy timeline. It was difficult to tell how much time had passed until it was mentioned after the fact, and the "at home" storylines with Rizzoli didn't coincide with the Wyoming timelines. It was also a bit strange to have the omniscient viewpoint of knowing that Maura was alive when everyone else thought she was dead, but that did work.

Overall, the shortcomings don't detract too much from the enjoyment of this exciting mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible suspense novel.   September 6, 2010
Susan Taylor (Apollo Beach, FL)
Great book. Holds your interest from the first page, just as the previous Rizzoli & Isles series does.
Wish Tess Gerritsen would write more great books, instead of wasting her time on the awful TV series she is making now. There is no comparison between the books and her TV show!

2 out of 5 stars Returned it   September 5, 2010

I did not order the MP3 version but was sent it twice. Returned it twice.

5 out of 5 stars YOU WILL BE BREATHLESS THROUGHOUT!   September 4, 2010
SWEETPEA (Baltimore, MD)
Maura Isles was heartbroken. She was in a relationship with Daniel Brophy, a Catholic priest, and things weren't going well.

Boston medical examiner, 42 year old, Dr. Maura Isles is attending a convention in Wyoming. She joins some old friends on a ski trip to the nearby snow covered mountains. Their SUV stalls out on a remote snowy road as a blizzard strikes and the mystery begins and the plot thickens and you won't ever guess the ending!

Several days later, Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli learns of Maura's death as her charred body was found in a ravine. Grieving Jane vows to learn what happened to her friend. Accompanying her to Wyoming is FBI agent Gabriel Dean and Father Daniel Brophy.

The reader will probably lose some sleep over this one! This is a wonderful suspense thriller that will keep the reader breathless throughout!
